NORTHWEST AIRLINES PROPOSES ADDITIONAL BOOKING FEES ON TICKETS

In what industry experts consider yet another “hidden and selective fare increase”, Northwest Airlines caught consumers and travel agencies off guard with the announcement that it will impose new fees for travelers who don’t use their website to book reservations.

Northwest announced Tuesday, that effective September 1, it will apply fees to domestic tickets issued through United States and Canadian travel agencies that use global distribution systems. GDS systems, the long-held agency booking tool that travel agents use to compare fares and flight availability on many airlines at a time, provide the industry’s most thorough and unbiased fare search. Additionally, it provides travel agencies with complete control of a client’s reservation record and facilitates our ability to best serve our customers with regard to exchanges, schedule changes, and after hours assistance.

Fees will range from $3.75 to $7.50 per ticketed reservation, and will not be part of the ticket cost, but will be charged monthly, through the travel agency.

Additionally, on August 27, Northwest will begin charging consumers $5.00 per transaction for all tickets booked through its’ reservation centers, and $10.00 for tickets purchased at the airport.

Northwest Airlines' Policy Represents More Customer Contempt
U.S. DOT and States Attorneys General should investigate

August 25--The Business Travel Coalition (BTC) today voiced concern in an Open Letter to be sent to major airline CEOs over a new policy announced by Northwest Airlines. The policy seeks to transfer some $70M in product distribution costs to customers through additional charges. (See AP story for details.) Charging customers for something they are already paying for in the price of their tickets would appear to be an unethical business practice that the U.S. Department of Transportation and States Attorneys General would want to consider investigating.
