Avis
plans aggressive growth strategy over next three years
Avis said it intends to open at least 300 local market locations
over the next three years. The new locations are part of
Avis' strategy to aggressively expand beyond airports and
into local market locations.
"The local market in the U.S. is an
area showing tremendous growth," said Ray Koch, vice

Group, parent of Avis. "Customers rent from these locations
for a variety of reasons -- whether they are taking a long
trip and want to avoid putting miles on their car or their
own car is being repaired. Our expansion in this market
will ensure that Avis is conveniently located to serve all
their rental needs."
Since July 2004, Avis has opened 67 new

Amtrak stays alive even though it's a failure - Baltimore
Sun
March 30, 2005 -- If the federal government had supplied
stagecoach service in the 19th century, we'd still have
stagecoaches in operation. Luckily, Washington was wise
enough to stay out of that business. It was not wise enough
to stay out of the passenger rail business, which is why
we still have Amtrak. More

Uphill
for Amtrak - Boston Globe
March 30, 2005 -- FREE-MARKET believers look at Amtrak and
see a subsidy-devouring rail system just waiting to be handed
over to small, entrepreneurial transportation companies
that would run trains on tracks owned and maintained by
compacts of state governments. At the other extreme, advocates
of a European-quality, nationally owned high-speed train
service in this country yearn for a leader with the vision
to do for railroads what Dwight Eisenhower did for the Interstate
Highway System. More

Hotels
- What will they wow us with next?
