Service Alert: Amtrak restores service between New York City and Washington
May 13, 2005 -- Most scheduled Amtrak service in the Northeast was restored this morning. Train service had been suspended due to a fire on Amtrak’s Portal drawbridge spanning the Hackensack River between Newark, NJ and New York Thursday evening. In all, six morning Amtrak trains were canceled today, with passengers being provided alternate departures. Delays of 5-15 minutes due to continuing repair work at the bridge are expected throughout today and the weekend. MORE

Track Work to Affect Some Amtrak Trains Operating Between Virginia and Florida
May 13, 2005 -- To accommodate upcoming maintenance work on tracks owned by CSX Railroad, Amtrak is temporarily changing schedules for some trains operating in the Southeastern United States from March 28 to June 23, 2005. MORE

Machine Readable Passports Required for all Visa Waiver Program Travel as of June 26, 2005
May 12, 2005 -- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) today reminded travelers from 27 Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries that as of June 26, 2005, they must have a machine-readable passport to enter the United States without a visa, as mandated by Congress. Machine-readable passports have a sequence of lines that can be swiped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers to confirm the passport holder’s identity quickly and to obtain other information about the holder typically found on a passport’s inside cover.
