Travel industry adjusts after London attacks
In the wake of Thursday's rush-hour terrorist bombings in central London, airlines and hotels responded by waiving cancellation fees or letting passengers rebook at a later date with no penalty. Many travelers, meanwhile, adopted a stiff upper lip. And industry experts said they doubted the deadly attacks would have a lasting effect on what has been a banner year for U.S. tourism to Britain. Amtrak Raises Security Threat Level
July 7, 2005 -- Amtrak has increased the railroad's security threat level in response to the terrorist bombings in London's transit system. This means Amtrak is putting more resources into its security efforts in stations, aboard trains and along the railroad. The heightened security involves deployment of more officers and K-9 teams as well as briefings to the railroad's employees reminding them to continue to be vigilant and on alert for suspicious activity. Marriott Waives Cancellation Fees in London
All of London properties are open and operating. However, the company has decided to waive cancellation fees for reservations at the hotels in London as well as at Heathrow and Gatwick airports. This policy applies to stays now through Sunday, July 24, 2005. MORE

London Blasts Hit Airline Stocks, But Flight Schedules Unaffected
July 7, 2005 -- The string of explosions in central London this morning caused airline stocks on both sides of the Atlantic to fall amid fresh terrorism fears. Transportation systems throughout the city were shut down in the aftermath, initially including bus and rail links to area airports, though such services as Heathrow Express have been at least partially restored. Meanwhile, flight operations at London airports at press time were not affected, according to airport operator BAA. MORE

July 7, 2005 -- America West Group Holdings and US Airways Group, Inc. announced that Tudor Investment Corp., has made a $65 million commitment to provide equity funding for US Airways’ Plan of Reorganization (POR) in exchange for approximately 3.9 million shares of new common stock at a price of $16.50 per share. Reorg Plans: US Airways Files, UAL Sets Date
July 1, 2005 -- US Airways yesterday filed a reorganization plan with the bankruptcy court overseeing its Chapter 11 case. Along with the plan, the airline filed a disclosure statement related to its planned merger with America West Airlines. The court scheduled an Aug. 9 hearing to approve the disclosure statement. July 7, 2005 -- The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Assn yesterday reversed itself and asked the National Mediation Board to release the union from contract talks with Northwest Airlines, citing the carrier's refusal to "take contract negotiations seriously." MORE

American Airlines Adjusts Haiti Service
Effective July 6, the airline will cancel one of two daily non-stops between Port-au-Prince and New York/JFK. On July 15, the airline will cancel one of its four Port-au-Prince-Miami flights. A second Miami-Port-au-Prince flight will be canceled Aug. 23. Effective Aug. 23, American Airlines will operate two daily round-trips to Miami-Port-au-Prince route, one flight between Haiti and New York/JFK, and one in the Ft. Lauderdale- Haiti market. MORE

July 6, 2005 -- Southwest carried 6.8% more passengers in June over the same month a year ago, but the airline's load factor — or percentage of seats filled — fell to 76.2% from 78.8%, AP/Business Week reports. MORE
