new tax increase means unfriendlier skies
Feb. 2, 2007 - The controversial change, announced in December
by United Kingdom Chancellor Gordon Brown, doubles the country's
Air Passenger Duty on long-haul flights to 40 British pounds
for economy class, or about $78 (the premium-class tax also
doubles, to 80 pounds, or about $157). The increase boosts
the already high total cost of taxes and fees in economy class
between the USA and the U.K. to nearly $300, more than double
the amount levied on flights to rival low-cost hub Amsterdam.

trusted traveler program sought
Jan. 31, 2007 - Believing it would help stem the USA's diminishing
appeal to travelers from abroad, the U.S. travel industry
asked Congress on Wednesday to launch a special trusted traveler
program for international visitors.
Hundreds
Lost Money in Alleged Travel Scam
Feb. 1, 2007 - A new travel scam involving a North Carolina
travel agency has appeared in Maryland. The Carroll County
State's Attorney's Office says Barbara Herrington and her
Mooresville travel agency Southern Travel ripped off hundreds
of Maryland residents.
Most of the victims were charged at least one-thousand dollars
for a promised Hawaiian vacation, but never got the trip for
which they paid. The victims had attended a presentation about
the trip at a V-F-W Post in December. The county sheriff's
office says the victims lost a combined total of $115,000.
Herrington already faces unrelated fraud charges. Several
counties are working with police on new charges against Herrington.

says trans fats will check out
Feb. 1, 2007 -Marriott International (MAR) said Thursday that
by mid-February it will eliminate trans fats from the food
it serves at its 2,300 North American hotels.

Mexico orders US Airways to stop serving alcohol
Jan. 31, 2007 - The cease-and-desist order came as authorities
discovered the airline lacked the required public service
liquor license while they were investigating a fatal drunken
driving crash caused by a man who allegedly was intoxicated
on a US Airways flight to Albuquerque, said Ed Lopez, superintendent
of the state Regulation and Licensing Department.

proposes raising pilot retirement age to 65
Jan. 31, 2007 - Airline pilots would be allowed to fly until
they turn 65 instead of the current mandatory retirement age
of 60 under new rules proposed by the Federal Aviation Administration. |
