Flu Update May 8: Travel Screening Continues

A number of countries have enacted special examination procedures for flights arriving from North America. The procedures vary from taking every passengers' temperature and quarantining those with a fever (Japan) to exiting all passengers through a thermal sensor and examining those who set off the meter (Taiwan) to personally interviewing each passenger and examining those displaying any signs of illness (Australia). Reports from travelers indicate these additional procedures can take up to an hour. Travelers are advised to allow for this additional time in planning their schedules. For more specific information by country click here.

Can I Change My Ticket? Currently all major airlines are permitting passengers who bought tickets to Mexico for travel within certain dates to reschedule or apply the ticket to a new destination without penalty. Please consult the links below for up-to-date policies for each airline.

Where Can I Get More Information? The following links provide additional information concerning the outbreak, arrival procedures by country, and what companies can do to prepare, sample sick policies, etc.

International Business Travel and Swine Flu
If you are traveling overseas for work anytime soon, you may want to consider registering with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department's travel registration website. By registering, you'll make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact you in case of an emergency, or if your travel will be impacted by an outbreak of flu in the vicinity. For additional information, please visit the State Department's international travel warnings and updates.

3. Effective May 5, 2009, all visa applications must now also include a "Declaration Form" from the China Embassy (or Consulate) requiring the applicant to "list countries or US states that the applicant has visited in the past 2 weeks in a time sequence."

Business Travel: A Guide to Luggage Delivery Services
Have your luggage shipped instead of checking it in on your next flight. Last year, 3.1 million pieces of luggage were reported lost, delayed, or damaged. If you are toting a golf bag or heavy suitcase, or just want to avoid baggage check-in, luggage delivery may be worth the (rather hefty) price.
