Europe Cold, Snow More Ahead This Weekend

An extended period of cold and heavy snow has plagued particularly eastern and southern Europe. Unfortunately there's more cold and snow ahead. This next storm is taking an odd path, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean.

Portugal - Mass Demonstrations Feb 11

Unions Plan Mass Demonstration in Lisbon Feb. 11: Unions, including Portugal's largest trade federation, CGTP, have announced a mass demonstration in central Lisbon on Feb. 11 to protest the country's ongoing austerity measures. Union members and activists are planning to meet at several points across the city at 1500 and march towards Terreiro do Paco (Palace Square). The starting points include Martim Moniz, Praca da Restauradores, Santa Apolonia, and Cais do Sodre. Expect commercial, public service, and mass transit disruptions.

Russia - Measles Outbreak in St. Petersburg

Measles Outbreak in St. Petersburg: As of Feb. 7, Russian health officials reported 87 cases of measles in St. Petersburg since mid-January. Authorities have reported measles cases from 10 of 18 city districts, with Krasnoselsky and Kirovsky most affected. Authorities reported that more than 90 percent of the cases have occurred in unvaccinated individuals.

Mexico - State Department Updates Travel Warning

The U.S. State Department has updated and expanded its travel warning for Mexico, providing a more detailed, state-by-state security assessment and noting any restrictions on U.S. government workers traveling within the country.

Italy -Air France and KLM Stage Strike

France and KLM crewmembers are planning to stage a four-hour strike at Milan's Malpensa Airport starting at 1000 Feb. 13. Arriving flights will probably not experience disruptions, but delays are likely on outbound flights until the industrial action is over and airlines clear backlogs.

Greece - General Strike

Public transportation services, including buses, trams, and trolleys, will be unavailable in Athens Feb. 10-11 during a 48-hour, public and private sector general strike.
