Q and A

What is the difference between a Travel Alert and a Travel Warning?

The State Department issues two types of travel notices. A Travel Alert is issued for a short-term situation, such as a protest or weather event. The more serious Travel Warning is used for situations that have a longer-term impact on travel and travelers, such as political unrest or war. All State Department notices should be reviewed and analyzed in terms of your specific travel plans and personal/business security concerns. All international travelers are encouraged to sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This provides the most current information about the country where you will be traveling or living and makes it easier for consular officers in U.S. embassies and consulates around the world to contact you and your loved ones during an emergency. To enroll go to STEP web site.

Did you know? Consider these safety tips:

  • Before traveling internationally make two copies of your passport and other identification; leave one at home with family and pack the other to take with you in a separate bag or pocket from the documents themselves
  • Avoid having your credit card frozen for questionable foreign transactions by contacting your credit card company before departure to let them know where you will be
  • Take photos of your electronics or other valuables, including the luggage itself
  • Always sign hotel registers with last name and first initial only
  • Request hotel rooms between the 4th and 6th floors
  • Keep a hotel matchbook or business card in your pocket and one by the hotel room phone
