India - Air India Strike Enters Third Week

A strike by Air India pilots has entered its third week, despite ongoing negotiations between the union and management. The airline implemented a contingency plan May 16 that has halted the worst disruptions, but some cancellations and delays continue, even on international flights. Passengers complain that many flights are canceled at the last minute, often leaving them stranded.

England - Baggage Handlers on Strike at Stansted

The union that represents baggage handlers at Stansted Airport in London is planning seven days of strike action. The disruption will include stoppages over the bank holiday weekend which could affect travelers flying in and out of the UK. There will also be strikes from 5.30 a.m. on Saturday until 5.30 a.m. on Monday, May 28 and from 5.30 a.m. on Saturday, June 2 until 5.30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 6.

Mexico - Hurricane Bud

Hurricane Bud, a Category 2 storm, is churning toward the southwestern coast of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said. "The center of Bud will be near ... the southwestern coast of Mexico late Friday and Saturday," the center said. The official forecast track does not show the hurricane making landfall in Mexico, though outer bands present hazards for mariners and can cause flash floods, mudslides, and life-threatening current conditions.

Canada - Ongoing Student Protests in Quebec City and Montreal

An ongoing wave of student protests in Quebec is showing signs of intensifying and an increased potential for violence, particularly in Montreal. Student organizations plan to continue holding demonstrations every night indefinitely. Although some groups may announce plans for rallies in advance, such gatherings can still be unpredictable as student organizations are unlikely to adhere to their officially reported march routes or venues. Spontaneous protests are also possible. Protests have turned violent in the past, including clashes with police, vandalism, and arson. Expect heightened security at protest sites. Police or crowds could block streets, causing traffic delays.
Q and A

The flight I really want is sold out in the lowest price - is it possible to be waitlisted?

Whether or not a waitlist is permitted will depend on the airline and fare rules. Often the deeply discounted fares do not allow waitlists, but intermediate and higher fares usually do. Many travelers will hold a reservation at a higher fare while waiting to see if the waitlist for a lower fare will clear. If you do so please remember that the hold limits of the higher fare must be observed. This means that you will usually need to either purchase the higher fare ticket or cancel the higher fare reservation within 24 hours. If the higher fare ticket is non-refundable, once it is purchased the airline's exchange fee (usually $150) will apply if the lower fare clears.
