Caribbean and U.S. – Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew is expected to be a Category 4 storm when it begins up the east coast of Florida in the early hours of October 7th. before veering out to sea off the coast of South Carolina on October 8th. Emergencies have been declared in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, with mandatory and voluntary evacuations ordered. Depending on how close to land the center of circulation comes, strong winds gusting between 75-100 mph could occur. Widespread power outages, property damage are likely, coastal flooding, and dangerous rip currents are expected. Eight Florida airports are closed and more than 1,600 flights cancelled so far. Amtrak has suspended service to the region.
