I am a dual citizen and have two passports – which one do I use when?

As one of the 1% of travelers who carry multiple passports you probably know that it can make your life easier or harder. With a few simple rules of thumb you should find yourself with smooth passage.

  • Always use the same passport to exit a country as you used to enter it.
  • When entering a country – and checking in for the flight to that country – always use the passport that makes it easier for you. For example, if passport A would require you to have a visa and passport B would not, use passport B.
  • Never flaunt your dual citizenship unless you need to.
  • Remember that if you get into trouble, it’s the government of the passport you used to enter the country that will be contacted.
