Alert: Acela Express - Amtrak Cancels All Acela Express
Service Due to Brake Problem
April 15, 2005 - During routine inspections of Amtrak's
high-speed Acela Express trains, cracks were discovered
in brake components on most coaches of the trains. While
no brake failures or other safety problems have occurred,
Amtrak has cancelled all Acela service today, Friday April
15, as a precautionary measure. All other Amtrak service
will operate as scheduled, including Regional, Clocker,
Keystone, Empire and long-distance train service. Metroliner
service will also operate, except for train #102, the
10:00 a.m. departure from Washington to New York, which
is also canceled.
Amtrak normally operates 15 Acela Express
round-trips between New York and Washington and 11 Acela
Express round-trips between New York and Boston. Acela
Express service represents approximately 20 percent of
Amtrak's Boston-New York-Washington weekday service.

Modify Nonrefundable Ticket Change Policy
April 12, 2005 -- Northwest Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch
Airlines have modified their policy on when customers
can make changes to their unused and partially used domestic
and international tickets, including WorldPerks frequent
flyer program award travel tickets*. The new changes will
take effect for tickets issued on or after April 15, 2005.
This new policy will have no impact on the vast majority
of customers and will help Northwest and KLM to better
manage inventory. More

Airlines to reveal
data on pet transport (source travelweekly.com)
April 13, 2005 -- Consumers soon will be able to judge
how well individual U.S. airlines are doing in their transport
of pets and other animals.
Beginning June 15, the carriers must submit monthly reports
to the Transportation Department (DOT) on incidents involving
the loss, injury, or death of an animal during air transport.
The statistics will be published in the DOT's monthly
Air Travel Consumer Report.
The data submitted to the DOT June 15 will cover the
month of May.

Lighters
Will Soon be Prohibited Past the Security Checkpoints
In response to a provision in The Intelligence Reform
and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, TSA has added all
lighters to its Prohibited Items List – which means
they will soon be prohibited past the security checkpoints
at the nation’s airports. The ban is effective immediately,
but TSA will not begin enforcement action until Thursday,
April 14, 2005. More
